Georgy Arkadyevich Shengeli lived for sixty-two years, publishing 17 books of his own poems and 140 thousand lines of translations by Byron, Verhaeren, Heine, Hugo, Heredia, Baudelaire, de Lisle, Horace, Khayyam and other poets. He was characterized by vigilance and filigree of rhymes, special sensitivity to poetic rhythms. He also wrote poetry works “Treatise on Russian Verse”, “Technique of Verse” and numerous articles and memoirs. A significant part of G. Shengeli’s legacy remains unpublished, in particular his brilliant autobiographical novel “Black Shoulder strap”, as well as many poems, including the unique epic poem “Stalin”, only partially published in the magazine “Our Contemporary”. And to this day, analyzes of his complex relationship with Vladimir Mayakovsky, because of which, since the thirties, his path to literature was actually closed to him, remain scattered across various small-circulation publications. Today, the name of Shengeli is beginning to return to wide poetic platforms, and this literally explodes the consciousness of readers, discovering his amazing destiny and wonderful works.
