The book offered to the reader is the first re-edition of the famous “Travel” by A. N. Muravyov, already during the author’s lifetime recognized as the best among the writer’s numerous other books and essays. Read by A. S. Pushkin “with tenderness and involuntary envy,” “The Journey” went through 5 editions over 15 years and largely stimulated in the Russian reading society - from peasant bookworms to the St. Petersburg elite - a keen interest in Palestine and the Christian East. For Muravyov himself the success of his first book became the strongest stimulus for subsequent creativity. Many years later, remembering his first trip to the East and comprehending its significance in his creative biography, Muravyov will say: “The Lord rewarded me with a generous hand, for everything that I subsequently acquired, both in the spiritual and in the material, expired for me only from Jerusalem, and the words of the Gospel were justified over me: “Whoever leaves home or brethren for My name’s sake will receive a hundredfold”” (Matthew 19). In our days, when pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land becomes an integral part of the revival of the Russian Church and spiritual traditions, Muravyov and his book about travel to holy places are once again in demand and relevant.
