“Shchugor” is a hunting story by Flegont Arsenievich Arsenyev (1832–1889) - writer, ethnographer, teacher, researcher of the Vologda and Prisheksninsky regions. Arsenyev was the initiator of the opening of a women's school in Ust-Sysolsk, as well as a public library in Vologda. The title of the story “Shchugor” is associated with the river flowing into Pechora. The author describes the harsh, picturesque nature of the Russian north, the beliefs and customs of the Komi people (Zyryans). Arsenyev and his friends Volkov, Tenyukov and Zyryanin reached the very mouth of the river. Shchugor. One of the notable aspects of the story is the Zyryan legend about Mort-jur, a headless man wandering through the swamps. F. A. Arsenyev’s hunting stories were published in the magazines “Domestic Notes”, “Time”, “Journal of Hunting” and other thematic publications. His literary heritage includes more than fifty works. Among them are “Sheksna River Region”, “Zyryans and Their Hunting”, “Vologda Province”, etc.
