The fourth volume of the Collected Works of M.M. Bakhtin is entirely devoted to the book about F. Rabelais. The second half volume publishes the text of the third edition - “The Work of Francois Rabelais and the Folk Culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance” (1965). The article “Rabelais and Gogol (The Art of Words and Folk Culture of Laughter)” (1940, 1970), which grew from the final fragment of the first edition of the book about Rabelais into an independent work, is also published here. The section “Comments and Appendix” covers the history of “Rabelais” in 1960 -s years; traces the history of the main ideas and concepts from sketches in the 1930s to the 1965 edition; the sources of the book, its “dialogue background”, genesis and meaning of basic terms have been restored.
