This is a book by a writer-biographer - not a doctor, a book not so much about medicine - about the whole life of Leo Tolstoy, from birth “in Yasnaya Polyana on a leather sofa” to the last minutes at a previously unknown railway station, upon arrival at which, he, world-famous, declared himself “a passenger on train No. 12.” A book about the happy and sad days of his life, about his work, spiritual quest, love, family... And about medicine. In his literary work, in his deep thoughts about the world in himself and the world around him, in everyday life, Leo Tolstoy insightfully explored the indispensable, sometimes very complex connections between the spiritual and physical principles in every person. Overtaking the ideas of his time, he never separated one from the other; on the contrary, he constantly looked for new and new combinations of the “dialectics of the soul” and the “dialectics of the body.” His words, “We treat the symptoms of the disease, and this is the main obstacle to treating the disease itself,” are the words of today’s medicine, psychology, sociology, and philosophy. Tolstoy's attitude towards medicine, often mockingly critical and harsh, can be fully understood and appreciated only by taking into account his entire system of views. The artist Kramskoy, who created the first pictorial portrait of Leo Tolstoy, said that he had never before met a person “whose all detailed judgments are connected to general provisions, like radii to the center.” The reader will have to re-acquaint himself with Tolstoy’s biography, to see in a new way much in it that seemed well known.
