None of the heavy cruisers in service is able to withstand a well-aimed salvo of Deutschland guns. The most important components of ships of this class are not protected by armor, and the effect of a 280-mm high-explosive projectile will be destructive. Of course, cruisers can respond with fire from their 203-mm guns, but the German ship’s most vulnerable points are armored quite reliably; in any case, it can withstand much more hits than its “thin-skinned” opponents. Without exaggeration, we can say that the creation of the “Deutschland” and ships of the same type completely changes the usual strategy and tactics of war at sea, as well as many views on shipbuilding.
