The book by the outstanding German admiral Reinhard von Scheer (1863-1928) tells about the operations of the German naval forces in the First World War. From the beginning of the war, Scheer commanded a formation of battleships, and in January 1916 he was appointed commander of the High Seas Fleet (Hochseeflotte). In May of the same year, in the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of the First World War between the German and British fleets, he led the German forces. Scheer later became a proponent of the strategy of unrestricted submarine warfare, directed mainly against civilian ships. Written shortly after the end of the war, the book reflects the German point of view on the course and results of the naval confrontation between Britain and Germany. The book was first published in Russian in 1940 and has not been reprinted since then.
