“The Countess de Monsoreau” (“La Dame de Monsoreau”, 1846) is one of the most significant works of Alexandre Dumas. In this fascinating adventure-historical novel, the writer with remarkable skill resurrects the events of the second half of the 16th century - the era of religious wars and the reign of Henry III, the last king of the Valois dynasty. The novel is based on the love story of Count de Bussy for the young beauty Diana de Meridor, by the will of circumstances and the betrayal of de Monsoreau, who became the wife of the royal huntsman, as well as the story of the painful jealousy of Diana’s crowned admirer, the Prince of Anjou. The heroes of the novel are also the King of France Henry III and his jester Chicot, the de Guise family striving for royal power and the lover of dangerous entertainment Henry of Navarre. “The Countess de Monsoreau” is the second book in Dumas’s fascinating trilogy about the Huguenot wars (“Queen Margot”, “The Countess de Monsoreau” Monsoreau", "Forty-five"). About the further fate of Diana de Meridor, Henry III, Henry of Navarre and Chicot, see the novel “Forty-Five”. Illustrations by the artist Maurice Leloir.
