The setting of the story is the “Golden Quarter” of the city of Yokohama, so nicknamed for the abundance of hot spots, the very existence of which elevates the golden calf above all divine and human laws. The hero of the story is a teenager, and this explains a lot. The fourteen-year-old son of the owner of a slot machine hall seems like an ordinary boy. He loves his disabled brother, his grandparents, even if they are not his relatives, he wants to become strong in order to protect the weak. But the Teenager is lonely and mistrustful, and life has too many challenges in store for him. This boy had a well-known prototype - Rodion Raskolnikov, who once circled the streets of St. Petersburg in a golden fever.
