Cesare Pavese, along with Dino Buzzati, Luigi Malerba and Italo Calvino, is rightfully considered one of the pillars of Italian literature of the 20th century. Pavese’s literary heritage is small, but each of his books is a phenomenon, and a very unique one, and sometimes it is almost impossible to determine its genre. The novel “Until the Rooster Crows” is, in fact, two novels merged by the author himself: “Prison” and "House on the Hill" They are united not by heroes, but by two sides of one concept: isolation and self-isolation from society, which has always been considered an interesting psychological phenomenon, since they oppose the basic human instinct - love. Pavese copes brilliantly with the solution to this most difficult dilemma - his heroes, having gone through all the trials on the way to the right decisions, find peace and quiet with themselves and with the people around them.
