One of the most interesting English books about Russia, “What Moves Russia” (The Mainsprings of Russia, 1914), written by the famous journalist and writer Maurice Baring (1874–1945), is being published in Russian for the first time. The published book became the writer’s final work on the Russian theme. M. Baring traveled a lot in Russia and created several books about Russia and Russians, about Russian literature and culture (“With Russians in Manchuria” (With Russians in Manchuria, 1905), “Year in Russia” (AYear in Russia, 1907), “Milestones of Russian Literature” (Landmarks of Russian Literature, 1910), “The Russian People” (The Russian People, 1911), etc.). With his works about Russia, M. Baring tried to dispel false stereotypes of the perception of everything Russian in English society and introduce readers to the “unique magical charm of Russia.” The translation of M. Baring's book into Russian expands our understanding of the multidimensional, ambiguous image of Russia in the West, and this makes it interesting and relevant for the modern reader. The book is accompanied by an introduction and detailed editorial notes.
