School love. It was a long time ago. It was recently. For some, this is a memory that brings a smile in their later years. For some, it’s a memory that makes you wipe away a tear from the corner of your eye. For Amet, school love is Anna, the daughter of a Meskhetian Turk, a representative of a people repressed at the behest of Stalin, and a Bukharian Jew, a representative of a people whose roots go back to ancient Babylon. Everything seems to be the same. It would have been for Amet and Anna to start a family and live on a hospitable land that accepted their ancestors. But events of a tectonic scale intervened: the Fergana events of 1989, the collapse of the USSR. Anna did not wait for Amet to leave Crimea and left with his best friend Izya for Israel. Amet fulfilled an old dream in his native Crimea: he built a house, and more than one, gave birth to a son, and more than one, planted a tree, and more than one. Will he be able to turn back the course of events at the end of 50 years of his own life? Will Anna want to return to the past? Answers to these and other questions in the story “Greetings from the old boots.”
