This text is a kind of guide to a city that no longer exists - Rome, as it was in 313 AD. It is this year, marked by the publication of the fateful Edict of Milan, that marks the end of pagan times in the history of both the Roman power itself and its capital, which from this date begins to change its ancient face, gradually turning into a single center of the Western Christian world with all the external attributes of this status. Thus, the description of Rome as it was in this final year allows us to cover the entire urban planning and architectural and artistic history of the Eternal City, starting from the period of its emergence in the 8th century BC. and ending with ancient times proper. The main part of the guide is a story about the monuments of architecture and art that in the indicated year and earlier were located (and many are still preserved in the form of protected ruins) in the city of Rome. Structurally, this is a topographically organized series of essays devoted to individual monuments, their history and prehistory. The essays are combined into large sections according to the regions of the City in which the monuments described were located. The guidebook is accompanied by a short glossary of terms and personalities, as well as a brief bibliography. This guidebook is intended for a wide range of readers - both lovers of antiquity and those numerous humanities specialists whose research or teaching activities require knowledge in the field of ancient Roman art and the topography of ancient Rome .
