Olga Berggolts (1910–1975) is a subtle lyricist and poet of civic temperament, widely known for the famous poems she created in besieged Leningrad. The early poems are imbued with a bright, life-affirming principle, sincerity, and love for life. During the years of repression, in the late 30s, she ended up in prison on false charges. This terrible period is reflected in the prison poems included in this collection. The incredible poetic power of O. Bergholz manifested itself during the period of the most difficult trials that befell the people and the country during the Great Patriotic War. The book includes the poet’s famous poems, as well as diary entries “Day Stars.”
