Olga Berggolts was called the “Leningrad Madonna”; she was the “voice of the City” for almost all nine hundred days of the siege. “In the history of the Leningrad epic, she became a symbol, the embodiment of the heroism of the blockade tragedy. She was honored as the blessed and saints are honored” (D. Granin). From the diaries, prose and poems of O. Berggolts, following the vicissitudes of the poet’s fate, one can understand what happened to our country in the pre-war, war and post-war years. Berggolts is a poet of enormous lyrical and civic power. With her fate, she provides an incredible example of patriotism - a concept so discredited in our time. For the centenary of the poet, the Azbuka publishing house prepared the book “Olga. Forbidden Diary”, which included stunningly frank and powerful diaries from 1939–1949, letters, excerpts from the second, never completed part of the book “Day Stars”, selected poems and poems, and also presented for the first time materials from the investigative case of O. Berggolts ( 1938–1939), which was considered lost and became available only in the fall of 2009. The published materials are accompanied by commentary. The book includes little-known and previously unknown photographs and documents from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, from the Pushkin House (IRLI RAS), the Russian National Library, the Central State Archive of Literature and Art of St. Petersburg, from the Museum of the House of Radio . Also published are letters to his father, provided for this publication by the Manuscript Department of the Pushkin House. For the first time, readers will see the layout of the book “The Knot” with the author’s and censor’s edits (N. Bank archive in the Russian National Library). For the first time, this publication presents photographs of unique items kept in the family of heirs. The book also includes memories of O. Bergholz.
