The book “Under the Mask of an Englishman” is not formally the work of Sebastian Haffner himself. This is a recording of an interview with him and an article about him by a German literary critic. However, for those interested in his works - and his personality - there are many interesting facts about his life and work. In exile in London, Haffner wrote The Story of a German in 1939. 50 years later, the young journalist Jutta Krug visited the author of the book, who was then already over 80, and talked with him about his life in Berlin and in exile. In the interview that resulted from these conversations, Sebastian Haffner outlines the reasons why he left Germany and talks about the difficulties he initially had in England. In addition, he talks about his journalistic work in the German-language emigrant newspaper "Die Zeitung" and later in the famous "Observer". His first journalistic work, “Germany: Jekyll and Hyde,” dates back to the same period of time. "Under the Mask of an Englishman" is not only a fascinating, personal account of one life, but also an important testimony to its times.
