The cult of Black Madonnas, images and statues of the Virgin Mary made in black, has been widespread throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. More than one generation of researchers has been struggling with the mystery of the Black Virgins, why is the Mother of God suddenly black? Where did they come from and what do they mean? And why were they so fiercely worshiped by medieval knights - members of the Order of the Templars?..
