The book by the Swiss researcher J. Flory is devoted to the problem of forming the ideology of the noble class. Analyzing rare, little-known historical materials, the author paints a picture of the evolution of views on war and the role of the warrior in early medieval society, as a result of which the ideological foundations of knightly self-awareness stand out in relief and justification. This period is all the more interesting if we consider that the code of “knightly honor” and the myth of “fair and noble” war had a subsequent influence on European culture of the 18th–19th centuries. The book is written in a lively, figurative language and will be of interest to a wide range of readers.
