Naomi Frenkel is a classic of Hebrew literature. Fame came to her after the publication of the first novel in the historical trilogy “Saul and Joanna” - “The House of Levi”, which was published in 1956 and became a bestseller. The novel received the Rupin Prize. The trilogy tells the story of two children and their families in Germany on the eve of Hitler's rise to power. The author conveys the atmosphere among the assimilating German Jewry, touching on the various Jewish communities of Europe on the eve of the Holocaust. The novel became an event in the life of the literary environment of the young state of Israel. Frenkel's style is a fusion of realism and lyricism. Even the love experiences of the characters are described with restraint and balance, with a subtle sense of proportion. The slow drawing of the German people into the captivity of the satanic charm of Hitler and Nazism is consistently and deeply explored.
