When a bloody massacre of Indian tribes occurs in South Dakota, three-year-old Emily is left without a mother. A traveling English photographer takes an orphan with him to raise her in his Yorkshire mansion. The girl grows up, goes to school, learns to read. The whole village is full of rumors and questions: where did Emily really come from and what is her origin? The photographer is forced to resort to tricks and gives the now grown girl an unexpected gift - a bicycle. Soon, Emily's forays into remote corners lead her to discover a secret that will divide the entire village in half. Behind reality they will look for a fairy tale, and behind the fairy tale - reality. What will win - imagination or reality?
