A quiet village on the outskirts of a poor, remote province is shaken by a series of brutal murders. Innocent children lost in the forest become victims of an angry beast. Broken trees, paw and claw marks, bodies torn beyond recognition point to a rabid cannibal bear. But is this really the case? St. Petersburg detectives from the special department for combating maniacs, led by Roman Muromtsev, take on the investigation. The team finds clues pointing to the guilt of a cold-blooded killer, and not a rampaging animal. The provincial authorities are inactive and stubbornly turn a blind eye to the evidence. Local residents blame a certain berolac - half-man, half-bear - for the atrocities. Fearless detectives begin a methodical hunt for the “werewolf” to prevent the emergence of new victims. In the process, they discover an ugly truth: the most dangerous and ruthless predator is man.
