In Lord Mantling's house there is a room in which several people have died over more than a hundred years, and all of them were alone in it. And so the current owner of the house, together with his guests, arranges a game, the purpose of which is to determine the “lucky” owner of the chance to prove the inconsistency of the family legend. Sir Henry Merrivale is also invited to the game as an observer, who, together with Chief Inspector Masters, will have to unravel the consequences of dangerous flirtations with death.
