The novel “1863” is the second part of the unfinished trilogy “In the Polish Forests”, which tells about the events of the Polish uprising of 1863. The main character of the novel, Mordhe Alter, is interested in revolutionary ideas. He meets with the ideologist of anarchism Bakunin, a supporter of Jewish emancipation Moshe Hess, and the future dictator of Poland Marian Langewicz. Filled with romantic hopes and messianic expectations, Mordhe takes part in the hostilities of 1863 and witnesses the defeat of the rebels.
