"Last in the Family" is the final part of Joseph Opatoshu's trilogy "In the Polish Forests". The novel begins ten years after the Polish uprising of 1863. The main character of the trilogy, Mordhe Alter, returned from the war and settled on his parents' estate near Plock. He avoids people and tries not to tell even his daughter Sorka about his past. The daughter grows up, and it becomes more and more difficult for her to live alone in the forest. She gets married, obeying the will of her father, but family life is boring for her. Sorka becomes interested in Mr. Cronenberg, a young man with revolutionary views and a dubious past, and leaves his father's house.
