Alexander Arefievich Uspensky was born on August 11 (23), 1872. He graduated from the Lithuanian Theological Seminary, but soon after that he entered the 108th Saratov Regiment as a private with the rights of a volunteer. From there he was sent to the Vilna Infantry School, after graduating from which he received the rank of ensign. Captain Uspensky met the First World War as a company commander of the 106th Ufa Regiment.
