Book by the famous military writer V.V. Karpov is dedicated to one of the outstanding commanders of the Great Patriotic War, Ivan Khristoforovich Bagramyan (1897–1982, from 1943 - Army General, from 1955 - Marshal of the Soviet Union). However, the theme of this work is special: it deals with the difficult post-war era. The West declared a crusade against the USSR, and the threat of a new world war, this time nuclear, emerged. The material support of an army capable of conducting battles under conditions of the use of atomic weapons came to the fore. In 1958, the country's leadership decided that the rear of the USSR Armed Forces should be headed not only by a good quartermaster, but also by a commander competent in matters of strategy and ensuring combat operations in new conditions. Marshal I.Kh. was appointed to this responsible position. Baghramyan; he served in this post for a whole decade.
