Stepan Petrovich Krasheninnikova (1711-1755) belongs to those modest heroes for whom Russia is so famous. The son of a soldier, for his outstanding academic achievements he was chosen for scientific training to participate in the Second Kamchatka Expedition. The expedition set off in August 1733. After four years of difficult travel, members of the “academic retinue”, citing poor health, refused a further trip, informing St. Petersburg that student Krasheninnikov would handle the exploration of Kamchatka. And he did it! For 10 years (1733-1743) he traveled 25,773 miles across Siberia and Kamchatka (more than half the equator!), made many research trips to Baikal, along the Lena River, to Yakutia, but most importantly, he traveled far and wide , studied and described Kamchatka: its borders, relief, climate, flora and fauna, volcanoes and geysers, local population, collected rich scientific collections, made records of meteorological observations and descriptions of tides, compiled a dictionary of the Koryak language. But the main, epoch-making result of Krasheninnikov’s titanic work became the first Russian scientific monograph “Description of the Land of Kamchatka” - and it also became the first international bestseller. Almost immediately after going out of print in 1755, the book was translated into the main European languages: French (1760), English (1764), German (1766), Dutch (1770) - and aroused great interest among both scientists and the reading public. In order for this epoch-making work to see the light, its author laid down his life: having set off from St. Petersburg on a scientific expedition as a young student, Krasheninnikov returned to the capital only ten years later - and for another twelve, until his death, he prepared the book for publication. That’s why Today, 250 years later, we are getting acquainted with this terra incognita of the 18th century with burning interest, reading exciting, incredible, but nevertheless absolutely reliable descriptions of everything that Krasheninnikov met and studied during his journey. Added to this is a feeling of admiration: it turns out how much one person can do for his Fatherland. Electronic publication of the book by S. P. Krasheninnikov includes all the texts of the paper book and basic illustrative material. But for true connoisseurs of exclusive publications, we offer a gift classic book. The paper edition is richly designed: it contains more than 150 illustrations, including rare ancient maps and unique drawings. The publication is printed on beautiful offset paper. In terms of the richness and variety of illustrative material, the books in the “Great Travelers” gift series are not inferior to art albums.
