The second volume, “Continuation of the Arabian Nights” (1788-1789), is the last work of Jacques Cazotte (1719-1792), a French writer, mystic, Kabbalist and Martinist, who, as his contemporaries believed, possessed the gift of foresight. In our country, it gained popularity thanks primarily to the famous Gothic novel “The Devil in Love” (1772; in 1967 it was published in the “Literary Monuments” series as part of the collection “Fantastic Stories”). The writer’s serious fascination with the mysterious East and the resounding success in Europe of the French translation of “The Arabian Nights” (1704–1711), made by Antoine Galland (1646–1715), prompted Cazotte to create a continuation of Galland’s codex. Since then, both fabulous collections have been published together more than once. Cazot’s work is considered the most skillful continuation of Galland’s undertaking. And this is not surprising, because Kazot based his collection on the original Arabic manuscript of fairy tales, specially translated for him, successfully combining them with his own stylization and adaptation for the modern reader. With the advent of new translations of various versions of “The Arabian Nights” in European languages, Cazotte’s work was gradually forgotten. This publication is intended to fill this gap. This collection reproduces the wonderful illustrations of Clément-Pierre Marillier (1740–1808), created by him for Cazotte’s fairy tales as part of a series of illustrations for the famous French multi-volume collection “The Cabinet of the Fairies” (1785–1789). In addition to Cazotte’s fairy tales , the book publishes an essay about him by Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855), accompanied by classic engravings by Edouard de Beaumont (1821-1888).
