Isabella, Queen of Castile (1451-1504), was distinguished by her beauty, intelligence, energy and unyielding character. During her almost 30-year reign, a number of significant events took place in Spain: the discovery of America by Columbus; the internal unification of the country as a result of Isabella's marriage to Ferdinand, king of Aragon; external political unification - after the conquest of Granada, which remained the only stronghold of the Muslim Moors on the Iberian Peninsula, and, finally, the establishment of the Inquisition, headed by the famous Torquemada.
