This is the first republication of the prose of Andrei Sobol (1888–1926) in 75 years. Contemporaries highly valued the author. He found a unique tone, style, and plots to tell about the tragic fates of people in the revolutionary and post-revolutionary eras. Readers will find surprising anticipations of Bulgakov's diabolical motifs and affinities with the prose of Babel and Alexei Tolstoy about the Civil War. Unlike them, Sobol was a Socialist Revolutionary with pre-war experience and, accepting revolutionary reality, could not survive its cruelty. Before us is an obvious case of undeserved oblivion of a writer. We hope that he will be recognized again by our contemporaries.
