This volume presents a complete collection of works of the most interesting genre of ancient literature - ancient Greek funeral orations, preserved from the period from the 5th century. BC e. to the 4th century n. e. Some of them date back to the classical era of Ancient Greece (V-IV centuries BC), others belong to the time of the Roman Empire. Under one cover are combined both official speeches delivered in the presence of a large number of citizens, distinguished by a refined style and solemnity, and dedications to private individuals, often friends and relatives of the speaker, and therefore more heartfelt, marked by the strength of personal feeling. The latter include several speeches of the famous orator of the 2nd century. n. e., the largest representative of the Second Sophistry of Aelius Aristides, forming the basis of this publication. (In the series this is already the second volume associated with the name of this speaker.) These speeches are not only distinguished by the richness of language and imagery, an abundance of mythological allusions and reminiscences, but also offer a broad historical excursion, reflecting events of war and peacetime, describing ceremonial rituals, entertainment and everyday life. For example, one of the texts describes in detail the history of the Eleusinian Mysteries - the most important religious festival that united tens of thousands of people in antiquity and, as was believed, gave hope for the salvation of the soul and eternal life after death. Selected excerpts are included in the “Additions” section of this edition from ancient textbooks on oratory, telling in detail how epitaphs and monodies were created, and revealing to the reader the “creative laboratory” of the ancient rhetorician. Edition supplied with a detailed article by S.I. Mezheritskaya, reflecting the history and development of ancient funeral eloquence, an extensive historical and philological commentary, two annotated indexes that allow better orientation in the volume, as well as an album of illustrations reflecting both ancient culture and its later European reception.
