Do not artists create in order to depict perfect harmony, to instill peace in the hearts of people and allow them to enjoy the contemplation of truly beautiful and sublime images? The question contains the answer: sometimes the public’s expectations diverge so sharply from what artists see as the goal of their work that a scandal is inevitable. In any society, with the exception of an absolutely totalitarian one (such as, for example, Ancient Egypt with its indestructible visual arts for thousands of years canon), “scandalous” works will be created, because their very existence testifies to the possibility of dialogue in society and how multifaceted and complex the problems with which art works can be. Sometimes the form of a work that differs from everything that has been known seems scandalous history before, because in this case the stunned viewer feels how the ideas of what he has long considered art are being destroyed before his eyes, and not everyone easily comes to terms with this fact. But especially often, as the reader can see, an aura of scandal accompanies such topics and plots in which there is a clash between the sacred and the profane. The hype around inappropriately executed religious images, blatantly frank physicality, sexuality and seemingly inappropriate irony in art has not subsided for many centuries - only changes objects of criticism and the forms in which they are performed.
