By the beginning of 1945, despite all the defeats on the Eastern Front, neither the leadership of the Third Reich nor the Wehrmacht command considered the war lost - the German army and SS troops were ready to fight for the Vaterland bis zum letzten Blutstropfen (to the last drop of blood) and , having reduced the front and entrenched themselves on convenient defensive lines, they seriously hoped to transfer the war to a positional phase - following the example of the First World War. However, the Red Army thwarted all these plans. On January 12, 1945, Soviet troops launched a decisive offensive, crushed the enemy defenses, defeated Army Group “A” and in just three weeks advanced westward by half a thousand kilometers, surpassing the pace of the 1941 Wehrmacht offensive. It was a “reverse blitzkrieg”, retribution for the disaster of the initial period of the war - with the difference that, unlike the Wehrmacht, the Red Army struck at an enemy that was fully combat-ready and awaiting an attack. The Vistula-Oder operation is rightfully considered a model of offensive action. This book pays tribute to one of the greatest, most brilliant and “pure” victories not only in domestic but also in world history.
