June 1882. Another scandal at the Moscow races. A bookmaker was killed, and two of his colleagues fled with the money of the defrauded players. Horse breeders are alarmed - some scammers, disguised as the children of an outstanding trotter, are selling old outbred horses. Among those “duped” by them are many high-ranking persons. One of the Grand Dukes accuses the Moscow Governor-General of being unable to restore order in the Mother See. And then there was the daring theft at the All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition. The complicated case is being led by private investigators - a reporter for the Moskovsky Listok newspaper, Alexei Lavrovsky, and an assistant attorney at law, Sergei Malinin.
