The eldest son of Grand Duke Svyatoslav Yaroslavich lived a stormy, eventful life. After the death of his father and the reign of his brother Izyaslav in Kyiv, Oleg lost the Chernigov table and became an “outcast”. He fled to Tmutarakan, where he was captured by the Byzantines and exiled to the island of Rhodes, but thanks to his personal courage he managed to rise to the occasion and become a military leader under Emperor Alexei Komnenos. Returning to Rus', Oleg enlisted the support of the Polovtsians and in 1083 began a long internecine war for the return of the princely tables to himself and his brothers... For the rebellious nature and civil strife that he gave rise to and which brought a lot of grief to the Russian land, the author of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” calls Prince Oleg Svyatoslavich "Gorislavich".
