Dmitry Vasilyevich Grigorovich is a Russian writer, a prominent representative of noble literature of the 40s of the nineteenth century. His work was highly appreciated by V. G. Belinsky and L. N. Tolstoy. With such sincere sympathy and such sorrow, Grigorovich described the bitter fate of the peasantry and the urban poor that his contemporaries cried over his stories “Anton the Miserable” and “The Gutta-Percha Boy.” Grigorovich shows peasant life in detail and with love; the rich ethnographic material in the writer’s work is of considerable interest: folk rituals, customs and superstitions.
