Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) was the last major exponent of German idealism, creating a comprehensive system of philosophy such as, according to Engels, had not been seen since men thought. This system is based on the statement “everything that is reasonable is real and everything that is real is reasonable.” His legacy contains many contradictions (Hegel acts as a critic and as a defender of religion, as a statist and as a “thinker of freedom”), but it is generally accepted that of all the German philosophers he had the greatest influence on the course of world history.
