Kunikida Doppo was born in 1871 and died of consumption in 1908, having lived only 36 years. A short life was the lot of many of his contemporaries and fellow writers. Kunikida Doppo lived a short, but stormy life: a poor, hungry youth, work in newspapers, from where he was fired for his quarrelsome character and harsh judgments. He was married twice, was baptized, attended the Sino-Japanese War as a war correspondent, after which he became a staunch pacifist. He was constantly in search and boldly changed his literary preferences, going through a passion for romanticism to pure realism. Kunikida Doppo managed to write little, but all of his works are included in the annals of modern Japanese classics, and many of them are studied in school. This collection includes the best stories of the writer. For readers over 14 years old.
