The novel “Outlooked,” written by the Russian classic Nikolai Leskov (1831–1895), tells about people who are bypassed by happiness. They want to love and be loved, but they make mistakes that fatally affect their entire future life. The main storyline is the story of two sisters, Anna and Dora Prokhorov. Fate brought them together with the handsome Nestor Dolinsky, and he just can’t choose which of the sisters he likes best, and it soon turns out that Dolinsky is also married! Quite an ordinary story... But Leskov is a special storyteller, and even from a plot more suitable for pulp novels, he is able to create something special, without unnecessary pathos, filled with subtle humor and details that accurately convey the picture of the era.
