Monograph by S.V. Tsvetkov’s “The Russian March on Constantinople in 860 and the Beginning of Rus'” is the first scientific work that covers in detail this well-known but little-studied event. It was from this campaign that our people got their name - the Rus. It began the diplomatic recognition of Russian statehood, the beginning of the baptism of Rus' and the establishment of the first Russian Metropolis. It should be noted that this campaign is considered by the author in the context of historical events that took place in the Byzantine Empire, Khazaria, Western Europe and the Arab East and the settlement of the Slavs in Eastern Europe. The author convincingly proves that this particular campaign can be considered the starting point of the formation of the Old Russian state, which occurred two years before the calling of Rurik, with whom the beginning of our statehood was traditionally associated. It is especially important that one of the main results of this campaign was the baptism of Rus', the history of which the author devotes many pages to. The book is intended for both specialists and those interested in Russian history.
