Few residents of Vyborg and guests of the city, passing through the Annensky fortifications located to the west of the Vyborg Castle, remember that these earthen ramparts and ditches are the very place where, in the spring of 1918, perhaps the most tragic events in the entire centuries-old history unfolded. history of Vyborg. In the last days of the civil war in Finland, on April 29, here, in the ditches, about two hundred Vyborg residents were shot without trial, most of whom were Russian and did not take part in hostilities. To date, the names of 87 people shot in the fortifications have been established, but this list is far from complete. The Annensky fortifications are just one of several places in Vyborg where, during the days of the White Terror, executions of the Russian-speaking population of the city took place. The work of Lars Westerlund, Ph.D., brought to the attention of readers, is dedicated to the White Terror in Vyborg, its causes, its victims and executioners. Drawing on Russian and Finnish archival sources, memoirs, diaries and press publications of 1918, the author talks about how events unfolded, trying, if possible, to maintain objectivity and impartiality. “If possible” - since remaining emotionally neutral when addressing the authentic evidence of the executions in Vyborg is not an easy task.
