The hero of the novel “The Art of Resurrection” (2010) is Domingo Zarate Vega, better known as Christ of Elqui, a “folk saint”, preacher and mystic, one of the most mysterious Chileans of the 20th century. Providence leads him to the seedy mine of Voshka, where the legendary pious harlot Magalena Mercado lives. The grotesque and tender story of their relationship, taking place in the surreal landscapes of the pampa, is similar, according to the critic, to the first miracle of Christ - “the transformation of the saltpeter of the Chilean desert into the pure gold of the word.” Hernan Rivera Letelier (born 1950) is the brightest name in the new Chilean literature; winner of numerous national and international literary awards, Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters of France (2001).
