Even though the Greek and Roman crew members of the Argo II have succeeded, they still appear to be no closer to defeating the earth goddess, Gaia. The giants have risen—all of them; stronger than ever. They need to be stopped before the start of the Festival of Hope, when two demigods, according to Gaia's plan, will be sacrificed in Athens. For the final awakening, she will need their blood - the blood of Olympus. The demigods increasingly suffer from terrifying visions of the battle at Camp Half-Blood: the Roman legion led by Octavian is already within arm's reach.

The temptation to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens and use her as a secret weapon is greater than ever, but the seven knows from the prophecy that the statue’s place is on Long Island, where it might be able to stop the war between the two camps. Therefore, Athena Parthenos goes west, while Argo II rushes east. Gods suffering from split personalities are useless. How then will a handful of young demigods be able to withstand the powerful army of giants?

But no matter what difficulties await them on the way to Athens, they have no choice. They have already sacrificed so much. And if Gaia awakens, then all their sacrifices were in vain.
