The third volume of selected works by the famous contemporary French writer Georges Bordonov includes historical novels set in the 19th century. You, dear reader, of course, drew attention to the attractive feature of the author’s work, widely published in many countries, and now, thanks to this three-volume work, which has become popular in Russia. Before sitting down at his desk in the quiet of his office, Zh. Bordonov carefully studies the entire panorama of the historical era that fascinated him, the entire “pantheon” of commanders and rulers, “by whose good or bad will people live and die.” And then he pushes great people into the background (their silhouettes loom somewhere in the background of the landscape) and brings forward the figure of a nobleman, a “slave of honor,” in whose veins flows the blood of many generations of warlike ancestors. The author throws him into a turbulent stream of events and carefully watches how he carries the hero through whirlpools and rapids, how he breaks his life, fate, but not his spirit, not his will, not his honor. The setting of the novels is the western outskirts of France, whose landscape is scarce has changed since the time of William the Conqueror. Hilly, overgrown with difficult-to-pass shrubs, oak, chestnut, walnut forests and groves, rivers with wooded banks. Between them are peasant estates and noble nests - ancient castles. These places - the heart of the Vendee - are called "Bocage" (in Russian - "grove"). The historical background of "Cavalier du Landro" is the bloody terror of the French revolution against the rebellious Vendee, uprisings and riots of rebellious nobles and peasants, Napoleon's victories and the death of his army in the snows of Russia, the restoration of the Bourbons... The illusory opportunity to “write your own line in history” threw the proud, independent du Landro into the whirlpool of events in the first third of the 19th century. And although with his mind he quickly realized the doom of struggle, wars and uprisings, a sense of honor did not allow him to get out of the overwhelming stream.
