We wrote this book for two categories of readers: for future computer science specialists and for students of all other disciplines. The first category of readers, which includes undergraduate students who will become computer science specialists upon completion of their studies, tends at this stage of their education to equate the entire spectrum of computer science with programming, web browsing, and Internet file sharing, since this , in essence, exactly what they had seen before and what they had to deal with. However, the field of computer science is much more than that. Therefore, computer science students need to demonstrate the depth and breadth of the area of knowledge in which they are beginning to study and in which they plan to specialize. Providing this much-needed information to them is the purpose of this book. It will provide students with an overview of the entire spectrum of computer science, which will provide a basis for properly assessing the various courses they will take subsequently. This research approach is in fact the typical model for constructing introductory courses in any field of natural sciences.
