Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (lat. Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, c. 70 - after 122), a Roman biographer who gained fame thanks to “The Lives of the Twelve Caesars,” was born around 70, in the province of Africa, in Hippo Regia. He came from the equestrian class. His father was a military tribune of the XIII Legion, however, finding himself in the civil war on the side of the defeated Emperor Otto, he was forced to retire. During the reign of Domitian, Suetonius was sent to Rome to study oratory. There he later taught rhetoric and practiced law. Thanks to his friendship with Pliny the Younger, who provided him with patronage, Suetonius held a number of positions in the public service. When Pliny the Younger was appointed governor of Bithynia, Suetonius went with him as his secretary. After Pliny's death and return to Rome, he received the post of bybliothecis, who was responsible for all the state archives of Rome, and later, under the emperor Hadrian, for several years he held the important and influential position of secretary to the emperor, through whose hands all Hadrian's correspondence passed. However, in 121 Suetonius lost his position, apparently due to some kind of court intrigue, and lived on a rural estate. The date of his death is unknown, some sources give the year 135, others limit themselves to indicating “after 122.” Of the numerous historical, historical, everyday and philological works of Gaius Suetonius Tranquilla, only “The Lives of the Twelve Caesars” (in 8 books) and part of “On Grammarists and Rhetors” from a large work dedicated to famous figures of Roman literature have reached us in their entirety. "The Lives of the Twelve Caesars" contains the lives of 12 Roman emperors from Caesar to Domitian. The entertaining nature of the presentation contributed to the popularity of this work both among his contemporaries and in later times. CONTENTS: The Life of the Twelve Caesars. Translation by M.L.
