Gunki-monogatari (warrior narratives) is a literary genre that formed at the turn of the 12th–13th centuries. Originates from oral descriptions of military clashes in the 10th and 11th centuries. By the beginning of the Kamakura period, these descriptions had developed into a special genre of oral storytelling - katarimono, performed by storytellers. The largest gunki narrative, numbering 40 scrolls, is considered to be "Taiheiki" ("The Tale of the Great Peace"). In the center are the events of 1318–1367 associated with the war between the Southern and Northern dynasties. It glorifies samurai virtues and norms of behavior (bushido).
