The new volume of Henry Rider Haggard includes the long-awaited Breaking Dawn, the writer's first major novel. Despite the title, the book is not as simple as it seems. It is written in the spirit of sensational mystery novels. But instead of cunning police officers and private investigators, slightly different heroes are responsible for the detective plot here. The novel, like thirty barrels, is “filled to the brim with all sorts of amateur villains,” as Haggard’s elderly aunt, one of his first readers, caustically remarked. It contains a lot of things - joy and sadness, betrayal and loyalty. The intrigue is actively developing and begins literally right off the bat - with a fight between a “terrier” and a “rat”, two sworn brothers, heirs of the sinister old man Caresfoot. The novel is published in Russian for the first time.
