“In Lynch's films, the darkness is really dark. The light is truly unbearable, it is blinding. The fire really burns, it is so hot. In such moments of excessive intensity, the events on the screen seem to threaten to break out of the screen and pull us into themselves, capture us. And as if, again, the space of fantasy, the fictional space, the space of the narrative becomes too intense and draws us in, the audience, so that we lose a safe distance.
