The fourth volume of the Collected Works includes a historical story set in the turbulent 14th century. At the center of the story is the image of Wat Tyler, the leader of the rebel English people.
The historical canvas is taken extremely broadly: it is by no means only England, which, in fact, is being discussed. On the pages of "The Shower" we encounter a great variety of different people: Chaucer poring over astrological calculations, King Richard shaking with fear, Florentine bankers weaving intrigues, the frantic John Ball preaching. This whole colorful crowd somehow pushes Wat Tyler into the background, but very little information about him has survived.
